NORA Tea: A Time Tested Tonic for Reproductive Health

If you’ve dipped your toes into herbal fertility support (especially during pregnancy), you’ve probably heard whispers of the NORA infusion. This classic blend is beloved by midwives, herbalists, and mamas-to-be for good reason. NORA stands for nettle, oatstraw, red raspberry leaf, and alfalfa – four nutrient-dense, mineral-rich herbs that deeply nourish your body with a special affinity for the reproductive system.

While popularized in midwifery circles as a pregnancy tonic, NORA tea is SO much more than that! It’s a foundational blend for hormone balance, fertility, and whole-body vitality. It’s no surprise that we love a food-first approach to nutrient support, and this simple tea is an absolute staple.

How to Make a NORA Infusion

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 part nettle leaf

  • 1 part oatstraw

  • 2 part red raspberry leaf

  • 1 part alfalfa

  • Optional add-ins: peppermint, spearmint, rosehips, lemon balm to brighten up the flavor if these base herbs feel too earthy for your palate.

The Method:

  1. Mix all dried herbs in a glass jar and store in a cool, dark place.

  2. Add about 1 cup (or a generous handful) of the herbs to a quart-sized mason jar. Aim for the herbs to fill about ½ inch of the jar. If you like a stronger brew, feel free to add more!

  3. Fill the remainder of the jar with boiling water, stir, cover with a lid or a plate, and let it steep for at least 4 hours, but overnight is best!

  4. Strain and sip warm, room temperature, or cold throughout the day.

Pro tip: Brew a big batch! You can make a gallon at once and store it in the fridge for several days.

How to Use NORA in Your Daily Life

Preconception – Start drinking 1 quart daily 3-6 months before trying to conceive. This gives your body ample time to build nutrient reserves, ease stress, and support healthy hormone function from the ground up.

Pregnancy – Most midwives recommend starting NORA after the 16-week mark, once the uterus is well established and ready for gentle toning. Sip throughout your pregnancy to nourish yourself and baby.

Postpartum – Continue drinking NORA infusions after giving birth to replenish minerals depleted during pregnancy and birth, support recovery (physical and emotional), and promote breast milk production. It’s a soothing daily ritual that doubles as herbal self care.

Summary

NORA tea is a nutrient-dense, mineral-rich infusion that supports every stage of the reproductive journey — from building reserves preconception to postpartum recovery. Each herb plays a distinct role: nettle strengthens the blood and kidneys, oatstraw nourishes the nervous system, raspberry leaf tones the uterus, and alfalfa aids digestion and blood sugar balance. Together, they create a deeply restorative ritual for hormone harmony and vitality.
