Why 20 Minutes of Sunshine Can Change Your Body Chemistry

Atapa Snana is the yogic phrase for the healing science of sun bathing. Ancient yogis and many other indigenous cultures knew how to use the sun to heal all kinds of illnesses and help clean the blood of various pollutants & microorganisms. In the West we also have a history of using sunlight therapy that dates back to the ancient Greeks- it was called heliosis!

A moderate amount of sun exposure (15-20 mins) is incredibly healthy for your physical & mental wellbeing. In fact, the sun’s light is strong enough to kill bad bacteria – German solders after WWI knew of the discoveries that had been made in 1903 by the Nobel Prize winner, Niels Finsen, and used sunlight to disinfect and heal wounds.

Sunlight also penetrates deep into the skin to cleanse the blood and blood vessels. Medical literature published in Europe showed that people with atherosclerosis (hardened arteries) improved with sun exposure. Dr. Axe (one of my all time faves for integrative medicine) says that just 20 minutes of sunshine per day triggers your body to release over 200 antimicrobials that fight fungi, parasites & viruses. Get that sunshine today – and if your exposure is longer than ~30 mins don’t forget to use a safe sunscreen that doesn’t block vitamin D production such as Raw Elements!
