What’s a GMO?! Facts you NEED to know.

So you’re here because you may (or may not) have heard about these pesky things called GMO’s. What does that stand for? Genetically Modified Organisms. And I don’t mean just any organisms. I mean the food that’s on your plate, and on the plates of those you love.
Who would want to mess with the genes in my food?
Good question. And while I can’t tell you why exactly our food supply is being tampered with, I can certainly tell you who’s doing the tampering. The name of the company is Monsanto. Sound familiar? The name might be ringing a bell because they’re the same company that developed Agent Orange in 1969. Agent Orange was used as a “defoliant” in the Vietnam War. 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects. That is not including the thousands of deaths and disabilities that effect our own Vietnam War veterans. Case in point: the people who did this are now changing the genes of your food and producing the hundreds of pesticides and herbicides that contaminate it.
Side note: Monsanto is also the company that created Bovine Growth Hormone rBGH in milk. If you look at grocery store milk now, most say “milk produced without rBGH.” That is because people realized how harmful it was and now it is a trend to NOT use it. They also made DDT. Yeah. That company. Doing it again.
What exactly are these Genetically Modified Organisms?
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. The reason these plants are being engineered is so that they become resistant to pesticides and herbicides (so that more of these chemicals can be sprayed on them) or so that the ACTUAL PLANT IS CHANGED TO HAVE A BUILT-IN INSECTICIDE. Insecticide is a poison that kills small animals such as insects. Low and behold, we are animals as well, and poisons of any degree can affect our functioning, especially when fed to us on a consistent basis through food.
The insecticide (poison) is now part of the plant’s DNA?
Yes. When the bug eats that plant, its stomach literally explodes due to this lethal gut irritant. As large animals, this poison is not powerful enough to make our stomachs explode. Instead, the irritant tears tiny holes in our intestines. This is known as Leaky Gut Syndrome. After enough holes are made, our undigested food traveling through the small intestine leeches into our blood stream and organs, is seen as a “foreign object,” and is rejected/attacked by our immune systems via an inflammation reaction. It is no coincidence that America is experiencing so many stomach and GI problems. I am 20 and have already had a colonoscopy and countless intestinal tests. I used to be diagnosed with the catch-all “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” that means any discomfort and has “no known cause.” Now we know, because my symptoms are GONE.

Why are GMO’s allowed in our food? Are they safe?
Monsanto’s GMO products distort nature’s foods in ways that can now rewire your body and DNA. GMO’s have been shown in animal tests to cause sterility, illness and death. In most developed countries, GMO’s are seen as unsafe and banned.

What foods are GMO?
Honey – Honey can be produced from GM crops because of bees collecting nectar from GMO canola plants. This has shut down exports of Canadian honey to Europe.
Soybean – 93% in US – including, soy beverages, tofu, soy oil, soy flour, lecithin. Other products may include breads, pastries, snack foods, baked products, fried products, edible oil products and special purpose foods.
Sugar cane – yes, ‘evaporated cane sugar,’ ‘sugar’ in general, all of that stuff. even though most packaged foods are sweetened with GMO corn syrup anyway.
Corn – 90% in US
Sweet corn – 90 % in US
Potatoes – (Atlantic, Russett Burbank, Russet Norkatah, and Shepody)
Papaya – three quarters of the total Hawaiian papaya crop.
Cotton seed oil – blended vegetable oils, fried foods, baked foods, snack foods.
Meat – Meat and dairy products usually come from animals that have eaten GMO feed. Those animals are all sick and dying from the GMO right before we eat them.
Vegetable Oil – Most vegetable oils and margarines used in restaurants and in processed/packaged foods in the US are made from soy, corn, canola, or cottonseed.
Sugarbeets – any processed foods containing sugar.
Dairy Products – 22% of cows in the U.S. are injected with genetically modified bovine growth hormone (rbGH)
Vitamins – “Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is made from corn, vitamin E is made from soy. Vitamins A, B2, B6, and B12 may be derived from GMOs as well as vitamin D and vitamin K may have “carriers” derived from GM corn sources, such as starch, glucose, and maltodextrin.” -http://www.disabled-world.com/
In total, how common are GMO’s in our foods?
In the U.S., they are in up to 80% of conventional processed food. Unless it says NON-GMO, you can bet it is.

How long have we been eating GMO’s?
Since about 1993.
Why won’t America at least label them?
The Vice President for Public Policy at Monsanto from 1998 until 2001 was a man named Michael Taylor. He is now the DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF FOODS FOR THE FDA.
How can I avoid GMO foods?
The ONLY way to avoid GMO foods is to be careful about everything you bring into your household and put into your body. Since the U.S. won’t label them for us, we are forced go to great lengths to figure out for ourselves (without a big science lab). The only way that a food is non-gmo is if it specifically states it is “NON-GMO,” is “NON-GMO VERIFIED” ( http://www.nongmoproject.org ) or is ORGANIC. Make your voice heard. Attend peaceful protests, reach out to congress and your local government, and tell all of your friends and family. Most importantly, VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLARS. If you keep buying it, they will keep making it. If you STOP buying it, they will make the organic foods you do buy. The organic foods will then be more available and affordable.
